Weekends are the time to experiment in the kitchen. There simply isn’t time for a wasted, crapola recipe in the middle of the week— who has time for risks like that? Thanks to some recipe testing in the kitch this weekend, I’ve discovered that some recipes really can be perfect any time of the week.
I went to DM’s place knowing that I had to make Jessica’s BBQ Portobello Sliders. Teeny but hearty, I had a feeling both DM and I would love these. And we did.
The recipe was so swift that it came together in 20 minutes— a feat for me. I like to take my sweet ol’ time. It all went as smoothly as the pictures imply.
Dinner rolls for sliders, Bullseye because I'm a good Midwest gal, avocado slices, caramelized onions-- a first for me!
Patron on ice. Not really. My Patron days live happily in the latter half of 2009/beginning of 2010.
I don’t have any constructive criticism for the recipe. It’s killa. We didn’t even have the right spices, but I made a somewhat-similar mixture. They were still amazing!
What’s weird is that I have an unpredictable love-hate relationship with mushrooms, meaning that sometimes I love them and sometimes I hate them— and I never know what I’ll be feeling until I bite into the shrooms. When I ate these, I wanted everything but the mushroom. The first bites were magnificent, and then my gag reflex kicked in. HOWEVER, my mang assembled these sliders with egg in lieu of mushrooms in the a.m. and they were purefection. (Pure + perfection = purefection. I’m sorry. I can’t. Don’t hate me. *Name that show! AKA the only show I ever quote!*) I mean, really. BBQ layered with egg, cheese, onions and avocado. Ridiculous.
The ultimate test: Will I make these again? YES! But with eggs instead of mushrooms! Jessica, thanks for the tasty veg recipe! Now I just need to make her chocolate chip cookie dough stuffed cinnamon rolls…
Ciao for now,
Kailey
QUESTION: Which blogger recipe have you tried lately and LOVED? We’d all love to know! (Yes, I’ve started to speak for the majority. WTF, right?)

What a masterpiece…I’m also a little iffy about mushrooms, especially how they are cooked, I despise them having a rubbery or raw texture, blegh! Caramelized onions and avocado make everything better though!
And who would’ve ever thought you’d be thanking me for the VEG?! Glad you liked them, and I think they’d be amazing with egg too!
And it’s from … SATC – specifically episode “the post it sticks twice” as written by Berger. I need a life. Preferably one that doesn’t consist of me quoting SATC every 5 minutes.
Omgggg I want to marry you and eat these every night, it’s fine.
I made Jessica’s giant rainbow cookies and they were perfect!
Hiii! I recently tried the lovely Jenna’s (Eat Live Run) BBQ Chickpea Pizza w/ Carmelized Onions (WHY ARE THEY SO GOOD) and Gouda. http://www.eatliverun.com/barbecue-chickpea-pizza-with-gouda-and-caramelized-onions/ Yummm to the max.
Miss ya girly! xoxo
I used to despise mushrooms. I couldn’t stand them. Lately I’ve grown to like them, though. TRUFFLES, on the other hand, make me want to vom. My family uses truffle salt on everything and the smell seriously ruins any meal for me.
I’ve been eyeing these up since she posted them!!! A definite winner of a recipe..mmm
I tried the red velvet cake recipe from How Sweet It Is. Jessica’s recipes are PHENOMENAL.
I made 4 of Jess’s recipes for Easter desserts – they were all amazing, of course!
I LOVE mushrooms and prettymuch all the “hated” veggies. These look amazing, Kailey!
I hate mushrooms, but your version with the eggs sounds fantastic. I want! All of Jessica’s recipes always look so freaking good, I need to experiment with them more…
Ohhh i want to make these. SO simple. I think I’d love the mushrooms though.
ugh I know what you mean about mushrooms and gag reflexes. I am just now getting over my fear of eating mushrooms in large quantities…they are just so meaty for a veggie!
The Post It episode from S&TC is possibly my favorite, especially when Carrie goes off on Berger’s friend at Bed. “There is a good way to break up with someone, and it doesn’t. involve. a POST IT!” Priceless.
I haven’t made any blogger recipes lately, but those cookie dough cinnamon rolls are right up my alley.
Those look great – I’ll have to share with my sis – she’s a big fan o’ mushrooms.
I made this last week and dug it – http://www.thefoodhussy.com/2011/08/roasted-vegetable-chicken-with-orzo.html
But here’s one I’ll share that’s amazing – my Mom’s Peach Cobbler

I feel the same way you do about mushrooms. Sometimes I think they are great and other times they gross me the hell out. I don’t get it. At least I know I’m not alone.
Oh the sliders look so cute! I am that same way though with mushrooms- at times I love them and can’t get enough and then the next time I have them I HATE them… I feel like this usually happens with portabellos more often than the smaller varieties… haha so odd?
And that is def from SATC when Berger (lol and you were making burgers) breaks up with Carrie on a post-it!
haha funny story about the liking/not liking mushrooms – try veggie burgers (if you want to stay veggie) or real burgers perhaps? I’m sure it’d be delicious because the topings look amazing
and hm.. my favorite bloggie find isn’t a “recipe” per say.. it’s buttered toast. i just recently saw it on a blog and was like OH GOOD IDEA. and I’ve re-opened and old love. even better when it’s toast with butter AND jelly.
Ohh those sound good! Caramelized onions make all the difference. I scrolled up to see what cheese you used.. gouda!! A++ my favorite. I like mushrooms, so I would finish eating what you don’t like :p And the chocolate chip stuffed cinnamon rolls?! That sounds like these cookies my friend made that were vegan chocolate chip cookies stuffed with an oreo cookie in the middle. I made carrot cake cinnamon rolls once and those were goooooood! Hmm… recently I made Angharad’s Thai salad: http://www.eating-for-england.com/moosewood-cookbooks-thai-salad/
YUMYUM!!!
XOXO!
It’s been FAR too long since I’ve had a portabello “burger!” These look yum. And boy are my patron on ice (errr in a shot glass) days over too. Thank God!
SATC. Post-it from Berger to Carrie. Bam.
Molly- YOU WIN! Yes! The Post It Always Sticks Twice…I think that’s the name of the episode!
I’m with ya on the shrooms..sometimes I could eat them forever but sometimes I actually want to vom. I think it’s how moist (ew that word also makes me want to vom) they are when they’re done cooking. I just can’t deal sometimes.
Favorite new recipe is one that I actually found on allrecipes for banana oatmeal chocolate chip cookies. I mean…
These look so easy but SO delicious! I will definitely make those for my next party!
I love your handwriting! So pretty
Camilla- Thank you! That’s so sweet!
looks great! we have made two of jessica’s recipes, she is amazing
That looks great! I love mushrooms, really do, raw or cooked, so this sounds right up my alley!
P.S. I prefer writing things down too- I’m not worried about a piece of paper getting dirty in the kitchen and I always loved keeping a hard record of things! My fiance and I wrote letters back and forth while I was in college and plan to make a collage out of them all to frame and hang on our wall- memories
