NYC: The Food

by snackface on January 18, 2012 · 31 comments

While my first full 24 hours in NYC were dedicated to dancing and celebrating, my second (and sadly last) day in NYC was about the food. OK, and more shopping and bluffin’ with my Muffin and her hilarious and generous mama (who was also visiting).

Saturday morning, after a late night of dancing, we awoke, showered and dressed before noon.

Fresh and ready!

Muffin showed me around her stomping grounds, and her mom pointed out all the shops in which I needed to drop dollas. I refrained from spending until later in the day. We spent most of the afternoon in Williamsburg, which reminds me of what Athens, Ohio, would be if it were placed in a city environment and everyone had non-stop style. I loved it.

Before continuing our day-long shopping adventure, we needed to fuel. We stopped at Fabiane’s for sandwiches.

Candy-colored interior.

The best tomato-basil-mozz sandwich I've had since Italia.

It was as I was taking a huge bite of this sandwich that I heard the sweetest voice ask me, “Are you SnackFace?” Why, yes, yes I am! Just chowing down in Williamsburg and talking, fearing I have pesto stuck in my teeth. Lauren, thank you for making my trip complete by coming up to me and chatting for a bit! Your sweetness overwhelmed me and I am unbelievably flattered! (And where did you get your skirt? I want.)

Full and happy, Muffin, her mom and I shopped for hours and hours. I scored the coat of my dreams at Peachfrog for only $50 and the other ladies struck vintage and discount gold as well.

At 4:30 p.m. it was time to eat again. Shucks. Tough life.

YES. PLEASE.

Muffin’s mom wanted to ensure I experienced Max Brenner while I was in town (thank you!). And experience it, I did. While waiting for our food, I read Max’s page on how he got started. Someone needs to edit that for him. I’m glad he chose chocolate over writing.

ANYWAY. Back to what matters: the food.

Southwest Caesar Salad.

Can I please soak all my food in that “Mexican chili Caesar” dressing? Eating something “real” before going balls-to-the-wall with dessert was a formality, but a delicious one at that.

The desserts…

Deep Fudge Chocolate Cake & Shake for Muffin.

Crystal Sugar Churros Fondue for le mom.

The Euphoria Peanut Butter Chocolate Fudge Sundae.

That sundae is what I ordered, per Gabriela‘s suggestion.

Go big or...you know the rest. And I went home the next day so I guess I can't use that phrase.

Here’s the description from the site:

Deep chocolate peanut butter ice cream, dulce de leche ice cream, caramelized toffee bananas, spiced peanuts and pure chocolate chunks topped with whipped cream and crunchy hazelnut bits. Served with warm chocolate peanut butter and very pure milk chocolate ganache.

It was an experience in and of itself. My only qualm is that the “warm chocolate peanut butter” was not warm and I couldn’t drizzle it atop the several other layers of divinity. Again, tough life.

Even though our server quipped, “You ate all that by yourself?” I felt fantastic afterward! So fantastic that we continued our shopping adventures.

There were a couple hours of rest later on, which included watching Miss America. It was a train wreck. In the best, most hilarious way possible.

Cut to 11:30 p.m., DuMont Burger. We needed to be fed again.

You can’t tell what those pictures are. I get it. I’m sorry for the insane blur. Just know that at least once in your life, you should eat fries and mac n’ cheese with your best friend at midnight. At least once.

Never mind the indigestion that kept me up for hours. That’s never happened before. But I’ve never treated my gut to pounds of mozzarella, ice cream, more cheese and fries on the same day, either. Whateva.

I’m going to refrain from sharing the details of my extreme sadness upon leaving New York and my best friend. I truly forgot what it’s like to spend hours upon hours together. I forgot what it’s like to laugh until you honest-to-goodness think you’re going to pee in the middle of Nordstrom Rack.

Extreme arm party.

I miss the energy of the city, I miss the countless food-fan adventures to be had and I miss Muffin. Until next time…

Ciao for now,

Kailey

I can’t believe you went to Fabiane’s! It’s one of my favorite places in Williamsburg. I love love love their creme brulee! I also love Max Brenner. The desserts are to die for – I love the little smore station you can order there.

I don’t think I could choose just one favorite place to dine in NYC. The possibilities are endless and you can probably find 100s of different kinds of cuisines here. Glad you had a good time!

What an AMAZING trip. I’m so envious. The shopping, the adventures, the food…Oh my word. That sundae. I may have died. I love that you devoured it by yourself- I love impressing people with my ridiculous appetite!

And your makeup is perfection. Seriously, teach me your ways! <3

I think I NEED to make a trip to NYC for that sundae alone… Or for all of those desserts. I am from Philly (so not toooo far from NYC) but have only gone to the city a few times… You make me want to make a trip. Looks like you had such a good time!

You had me at caramelized toffee bananas. Oh, heavens.

If I lived in NYC, I would easily weigh twice what I weigh now. It would be worth it.

The sundae!! Yes!! How awesome were the crunchy hazelnut bits?! And don’t even ask me to choose a favorite place to eat in NYC. Depends on my mood!

Also, I have updates for you!! :)

Woah, the peanut chocolatey mess of a sundae sounds so delicious. I’ve never been to Max Brenner. I better put it on the list.

I am so happy I live in NY though because it makes it easy to check those places out!

My favorites:
Los Feliz (fancy tacos + margaritas)
Prune (Cocktails and Bone Marrow)
Supper (Buratta Cheese)
Taim (Falafel)
Mas Farmhouse (fancy farm to table)
Degustation (They literally cook the food infront of you)
Pomme Frites (Best drunken French Fries you’ll ever had in your life)

Awwww, this post tugged at my heartstrings – I feel what you’re going through. It’s hard to live apart from someone you’re used to seeing all the time, especially when you visit them in the context of the awesome concrete jungle where dreams are made of. You’ll be there soon – whether “there” is New York or San Fran! :)

Picking my favorite place to dine in New York is impossible. It depends on my mood, the weather, what I’m wearing, who I’m with, what I’m craving, which neighborhood I feel like visiting, what I’m doing later in the night/day, etc. etc. etc. If I had to choose, it would be the following:

-The Little Owl
-Peasant
-TALDE (just opened, already my fave, and not just because I work with them :) )
-Frankie’s Spuntino (any of them)
-Cafecito
-Tertulia

..I think that’s it for now. And it will change. Come back to New York!!!!

I love love love Blossom, its vegan and so so good. There are two but they’re both phenomenal.

I just got back from NYC myself – crazy! We went to UVA and it was honestly mindblowingly good – I had a fingerling beet gnocchi with spinach, roma tomatoes and several kinds of cheese….whoooooa buddy, best NYC eats ever!

So many good places to eat in NYC! I think Forty Carrots on the 7th floor of Bloomingdale’s is my favorite. They have THE BEST frozen yogurt you will ever have. ever. The PB flavor tastes like you’re eating peanut butter from the jar! The food is delicious, too. Healthy & tasty.

Darn! I wish I would have seen this earlier – I live in Williamsburg (by way of Cincinnati, where I’m from, too!). You made excellent dining choices and it sounds like you had a great trip :)

Next time, save room for a slice of Junior’s Devils Food Chocolate Cheesecake. Talk about going big or going home…

Omg that looks like such an amazing trip!! Isn’t it phenom being reunited with your bestie! I just did the same thing on a trip to NYC actually and had so much fun too! I’d forgotten what it was like to spend days together rather than hours… and consequently I remembered how much I loved it! I was supposed to go to MB too but I never made it… clearly need to change this asap!

Aww this sounds amazing and literally made me happy to read…probably because of all the food. And. that. sundae.

I’m all too familiar with indigestion. Perhaps I should take notes and realize that if you DON’T overeat on the reg, things like that don’t happen.

You make me miss New York! Glad you had a good time, though it sucks to be cut short.

Favorite restaurants are Beecher’s in the Flatiron and Cafeteria in Chelsea! Both have amazing macaroni and cheese, good wine, and perfect atmosphere. Beecher’s is like a cave- in a good way- and they have the best bleu cheese wedge salad in the world.
