Birthday Bites

by snackface on March 26, 2012 · 31 comments

Here in sunny Cincinnati, we had weekend full of celebration. Both MamaJ and DM had birthdays this past week. Naturally, I captured only the food on camera. It was a wonderfully delicious weekend in every sense of the word. I’m still savoring it.

The pictures say more than I can right now!

Sipping wine and cheering for Ohio on Friday. Still proud of how far we made it!

Potato pancakes at The Original Pancake House.

Sunshine, salad and mac n' cheese.

MamaJ made the mac n' cheese with 3 cups of cheddar, heavy whipping cream and who knows what else. She also used brown rice pasta, which worked perfectly.

A pit stop after an 18-mile bike ride.

Better than water.

We'll always go for a Mediterranean pizza.

Sunday dinner: roasted potatoes, baked beans, celery and pea salad, blackbean and chickpea salad.

The weekend ended with carrot cake and Mad Men. Who else loved the premiere? I was hoping to see at least one scene with Betty in it, but the ridiculousness of the “Zou Bisou Bisou” performance made up for it. I loved it.

Anyway, I slept like poo Sunday night and my eyes are already closing. I hope you all had fabulous weekends and Mondays!

Ciao for now,

Kailey

Questions:

  • Are you a Mad Men fan? I watched all seasons twice over while waiting for the season 5 debut!
  • What was the best thing you ate over the weekend? MamaJ’s mac n’ cheese!

Cheers to a weekend of lovely eats that rock your socks off! Also, we must enjoy a drinkie together at some point. Virtually is okay – but in-person would be preferred. ;-)

I’m pretty sure the best thing I ate this weekend was the hearts of palm cake from Garden Grille. It came with grilled sweet potatoes and homemade BBQ sauce. ENOUGH SAID.

It is INSANE. Yukon gold potatoes and hearts of palm with carrots and mushrooms in it. I wish I could teleport it to you.

Boyfriend made me Eggs Benedict on Sunday morning… And he used black forest ham instead of Canadian bacon! (which I guess they just refer to as ‘bacon’ here? I’m still investigating).

Total Mad Men fan here!! I was late in the game, but I caught up within three weeks. It made me want to puff into a cigarette too, though. So..corrupting. Haha! It was nice to hear from you again, Kailey! :-)

Sophia- Hahaha YES it makes cigarettes seem so sexy. And then I smell them in real life and gag. Lovely to hear from you again, too! xo

I had some homemade refried beans made with butter instead of the usual lard… Out of this world.

BTW, I went to Target to buy some supplies for next quarter, and came across your face! I saw two different pics on the Five Star notebooks So funny! And yes, I did buy one :-) .

It looks like you had a fun weekend! That mac n cheese looks so good. My favorite meal from the weekend was the vegetable thenthuk soup I had at the new Himalayan restaurant in my town. It was yummy!

i’m planning to watch the show during summer, but i did catch a glimpse of the premiere last night. i loved the costumes! The best thing i ate over the weekend had to be the “buffalo bomber” from veggie grill.

Jung, I am so jealous you live near a Veggie Grill! I crave the All Hail Kale salad constantly! Buffalo Bomber sounds fantastic.

I’ve watched the premiere 1.5 times now, and I love it more every time I watch it. I thought it was perfection, and I cannot wait for the rest of the season!

Hillary- I can’t stop thinking about the premiere! I keep reading other blog commentary about it (mostly silently disagreeing with the non-fans of Megan). The power play between her and Don…just makes me excited for the rest of the season. It seems as though she’s going to actually stand up to him, as opposed to Betty or any other woman in the past.

I woke up at the crack of dawn on Sunday and turned on the TV, without knowing to Mad Men! I had never watched it before, but in my sleepy haze and half-open eyes, it was good :)

Best thing I ate this weekend: nothing too exciting, I’ve been keeping it mild because of health issues… But have plans to go out this Saturday for a feast :D

Okay, I’ve gotta get on this Mad Men train – I’ve never seen it, but only hear good things about it! Guess I’ll be starting it up in Netflix! The best thing I ate over the weekend… hmmm… probably the breakfast sandwich I had before my race on Sunday! Bacon, egg & cheese on an english muffin – yes please!

Tyler and I made a roast chicken with potatoes and kale. It was so simple but sooo delicious. I think it tasted so good because we made it together and ate it together :) Adorable….i know.

Do you have the recipe for the chick pea & black bean salad? That looks yummy. Best thing I ate… Hmm.. I split a pretty darn good pizza with my husband at Mellow Mushroom. And by split I mean we ate the whole thing.

I love Mad Men fashion but I’ve never seen a full episode. I think I need another rainy weekend and a Netflix queue filled with episodes…

I made vegan mac n’ cheese (not as scary as it sounds, I swear) Sunday that was really great! That combined with the new Footloose remake made for the perfect girls day. :)

Caity- I’ve had some delicious vegan mac n’ cheese before! I’m envisioning lots of Daiya and perhaps MimicCream!

I tried really hard to get into Mad Men during the premiere – just didn’t work for me! The extra large kettle corn when we went to see the Hunger Games was my best meal! ;)

This looks like such a wonderful birthday weekend full of such delicious foods (and champagne which is always my celebratory drink of choice!) And omg I recently discovered The Original Pancake house and have had those potato pancakes– they are so good! It’s so awesome that they can make all their pancakes Gluten Free!! And mmm that pizza looks fab. I too am a huge Mad Men fan and was so excited when it came back on! I think the Megan-Don interaction is fantastic and can’t wait to Betty to come back! I think this is going to be a great season!
